The project helped raise funds that will benefit the One La Salle Scholarship Fund (OLSF) Campaign and Project Carbon Neutral (PCN), both projects of De La Salle Philippines (DLSP), the network of 17 La Salle schools in the country. The epic journeywas part of the culminating activities of the Centennial Celebration of Lasallian Presence in the Philippines.
Agustin and Espital conceived the project after reflecting on what they could contribute to the La Salle Centennial Celebration and to promote biking as a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle as well. Both Agustin and Espital regularly bike-commute to work. Espital, a community development graduate of DLSU-D works for a non-government organization while Agustin, who finished his bachelor of arts in communication also from DLSU-D, is a graphic artist with the DLSU-D Marketing Communications Office.
The Amazing Raise became an opportunity and a challenge to connect all DLSP member schools by bike, covering the northernmost school in Bagac, Bataan (Jaime Hilario Integrated School-La Salle) to the southernmost in Surigao Del Sur, Mindanao (De La Salle-John Bosco College).
According to Espital “even the small things that we do can spark something big”. And he hopes that through this project, others may be inspired to make a positive difference to others, society and the environment.
The OLSF Campaign and PCN are the center-piece projects of DLSP during its centennial celebration. The OLSF aims to raise P 2 billion pesos by 2015 and make Lasallian education more accessible. With this fund, DLSP hopes to provide scholarships to 20 percent of its almost 92,000 strong student body nation-wide. On the other hand, the PCN is an initiative to make all La Salle schools cleaner, greener and more energy efficient. PCN aims to measure the carbon footprint of each school and suggest mitigation solutions and alternatives to offset these carbon emissions.
For Agustin, “riding bicycles across the Philippine’s three major islands is a statement - to inspire change, unity, and awareness. Green is not just a color, it’s an active lifestyle.”
Agustin and Espital are set to arrive on Saturday July 7, 2012 at 8:15 AM at the NAIA Terminal 3 aboard an Air Philippines Express flight from Davao. From the airport they intend to bike their way to De La Salle University-Dasmariñas in Cavite. Other bike enthusiasts will join them along the route (NAIA T3 to Sucat Road Extension to Zapote, Kabila to Molino Boulevard to Molino Road to Salawag to Orchard Road to DLSU-D campus) in this Solidarity Ride. Upon arrival at DLSU-D they will be feted in a program arranged by the University Advancement Office.
The Amazing Raise: A Bike-For-A-Cause from Luzon to Mindanao was supported by DLSP, La Salle Institute for the Environment (LIFE), Blood Red, Bodato Burgers, Primal Wear, Red Dot, De La Salle Alumni Association and Rapid Printing.
