ICTC gears for ICT Week, focuses on environment

Preparations are under way for ICT Week 2012. With the new theme highlighting ICTC’s Project ICON, the celebration will focus on technology’s contributions to saving the planet through the proper management and disposal of electronic waste (e-waste).

This year’s theme “ICONtribute! ICT Creates Opportunities for Nature” was coined from the name of Project ICON’s mascot.

“With the blessing of our new building and the opening of our new home to the community over with last year, we felt that the time for the glitz and glamor is finally done. This year, we want to focus on something that is dear to our hearts and that is the environment. Hopefully, we can encourage students to help the Project ICON drive more. With the help of our partners, we will do our best to accomplish the mission,” ICTC Director Juvenal Bautista said.

This year’s celebration is helmed by the Information Systems Unit . Check out what's in store here.

Web Team completes new webpage for Office of the Registrar

The Web Unit of the Information and Communications Technology Center (ICTC) recently completed the new interactive website of the Office of the University Registrar (OUR)  with a fresh new look and new features that would enable the office to open communication channels with its various clients.

During the launching of the exhibit entitled DLSU-D 25/35 OUR decades of innovation, University Registrar Marialita Esberto acknowledged the support of the Database Administration and the Web Unit in upgrading their systems to serve the students better.

“The new design is a more modern take on the functions of the Office and is reflective of its constant drive to innovate and upgrade its systems. It also took into consideration the new features of the website and integrated them into the overall look of the webpage, “Angeline Cayago, Web Unit head said.

The new features for the website include a content management system (CMS) for the OUR to maintain the release of announcements and other information on its main page, as well as the Ask the Registrar section wherein personnel from the Office can answer queries by its clients in chat form.

Submission of grades now online for prelim, midterms

Due to the clamor of parents and guardians through the POLCA, students’ grades from the prelim period until the finals may now be viewable through the portal.

The Online Submission of Grades, which was done by the Information Systems (IS) Unit for all three periods, has already been implemented this semester to positive feedback.

“We wanted to accommodate the request of the parents who wanted to monitor the grades of their kids. This is also a good way for the students to keep track of their grades. However, there are still restrictions for students who have outstanding balances for their tuition based on the joint policy of the Accounting Office and the Registrar, as the viewing of their grades will be put on hold,” Marvin Legaspi, IS Unit head, said.

Tech team educates residents of Bahay Pag Asa

The Tech Unit of the ICTC has embarked on training the residents of Bahay Pag Asa on Basic PC hardware and troubleshooting in order to give the current tenants practical knowledge on operating computers.

“We have started giving 3 hour sessions every Thursday since August because we wanted to share our knowledge and give these kids a chance to enhance their capabilities as well,” George Muñoz, Tech Unit head said.

Muñoz said that they instruct the students in shifts and that their basic module is almost over. He added that personnel from their Unit feel a great sense of accomplishment after seeing the improvements in their young wards.

Bahay Pag-asa Dasmariñas is a transformation center for children in conflict with the law. Instead of detaining them in detention centers, these children are cared for in a monastery-type center inside DLSU-D.

Online application to speed up admission process

The IS Unit has completed the online application project for the Admissions Office which is expected to speed up the processing of information for potential students.

“The online application button can now be found on the Admissions webpage and potential students may input their information online. The system generates a code for them which they would need to show when they go to DLSU-D so their data may easily be accessed by Admissions personnel,” IS Unit Head Marvin Legaspi explained.

The system seeks to expedite the admissions process as students need not wait in line to have their data encoded. The system also supports the drive of the University to go paperless.

Online petition premieres next sem

Students may expect something new when they open their online enrollment page for next semester.

The Database Administration (DA) Unit, in a project for the Office of the University Registrar will roll out a new system which will enable students to petition for subjects more conveniently with the Online Petition tool.

The system which has been completed by the DA for several months now, is ready for rollout as soon as the guidelines have been set by the Registrar, said Jonah Dave Mendez, DA Unit head. He added that the system will allow students to view open petitions, enlist (equivalent to signing) or start their own petitions for subjects that they need.

This, he explained will also minimize petitions on paper which is very inconvenient to both the petitioners and the office.
