DLSU-D and LEDC Launch SIKLAB to Empower Entrepreneurs and Strengthen Small Businesses

WHEN BUSINESS GETS TOUGH, WE IGNITE THE COMEBACK

In a challenging business environment, starting an enterprise takes courage. Keeping it alive takes even more.

Across the country, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) face mounting pressures from rising operating costs, inflation, changing consumer behavior, increasing competition, and the demands of regulatory compliance. For many entrepreneurs, the daily challenge is no longer simply how to grow their businesses, but how to keep them running.

Behind every struggling business is a story of hard work, sacrifice, and hope. A business that closes can mean lost income for a family, lost employment for workers, and fewer economic opportunities for a community. For entrepreneurs who have invested their savings, time, and years of effort, closing their doors can be a painful last resort.

In these difficult times, entrepreneurs need more than encouragement. They need access to practical guidance, relevant knowledge, business networks, and opportunities to adapt before their challenges become insurmountable.

This is where SIKLAB comes in.

A New Spark for Entrepreneurs

The Startup Incubator Kickstarter Laboratory (SIKLAB) is an initiative of the Allied Business Department of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), De La Salle University–Dasmariñas (DLSU-D), in partnership with the Livelihood Enterprise Development Center (LEDC).

SIKLAB aims to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable business opportunities, assist existing enterprises in strengthening their operations, and help struggling business owners discover ways to adapt, recover, and remain in business before they are forced to close.

Its mission goes beyond encouraging people to start businesses. It recognizes that entrepreneurship requires continuing support throughout the business journey—from developing an idea and testing a product to managing cash flow, reaching customers, responding to market changes, and sustaining operations.

Through accessible business development support, SIKLAB seeks to help entrepreneurs make informed decisions, discover new possibilities, and build enterprises that can better withstand uncertainty.

And importantly, SIKLAB's business development support is free.

For entrepreneurs already dealing with financial pressures, access to guidance should not become another expense they cannot afford.

Helping Businesses Adapt, Recover, and Rise

SIKLAB seeks to provide practical support in several areas of enterprise development.

Business startup and idea development. For aspiring entrepreneurs, SIKLAB aims to provide guidance in assessing business opportunities, understanding target customers, developing value propositions, and evaluating the viability of business ideas before committing significant resources.

Business recovery and improvement. For struggling business owners, the initiative seeks to help identify areas for improvement, examine costs and pricing, review product performance, and explore alternative business models or markets. The goal is to help entrepreneurs assess their options and identify practical steps toward recovery.

Financial management and business literacy. Understanding costs, cash flow, pricing, and profitability is essential to business survival. SIKLAB aims to strengthen entrepreneurs' financial management capabilities and provide access to appropriate guidance on bookkeeping, business registration, and tax compliance through qualified professionals and partners.

Digital marketing and market development. In an increasingly digital economy, entrepreneurs need affordable ways to reach customers. SIKLAB can help them explore social media marketing, e-commerce, digital selling, and other market development strategies, as well as opportunities for product testing and participation in community bazaars.

Mentorship and innovation. Through the involvement of faculty members, students, alumni, business practitioners, and other partners, SIKLAB can connect entrepreneurs with relevant expertise in marketing, product development, business planning, and operational improvement.

These areas of support reflect a central principle: business owners should be equipped not only to start enterprises, but also to recognize problems early, respond to challenges, and pursue opportunities for sustainable growth.

Bringing Academic Expertise Into the Real World

SIKLAB also provides an opportunity for DLSU-D to translate academic knowledge into practical community impact.

Through CBAA's expertise in entrepreneurship, marketing, and business management, the initiative can connect classroom learning with the actual needs of local entrepreneurs. Faculty members and qualified mentors can provide guidance, while supervised student projects may contribute to market research, product development, digital marketing, and business planning.

This collaboration creates value for both entrepreneurs and students. Business owners gain access to fresh perspectives and relevant expertise, while students develop practical experience in solving business problems and understanding the realities of entrepreneurship.

Industry practitioners, alumni, and community partners can further strengthen the initiative by contributing professional knowledge, market connections, and opportunities for collaboration.

Through these partnerships, SIKLAB aspires to help build a more connected entrepreneurial ecosystem—one where the university, the business community, and local entrepreneurs work together to develop practical solutions and create economic opportunities.

More Than Starting Businesses: Keeping Livelihoods Alive

The impact of entrepreneurship development should not be measured only by the number of startups launched or participants trained. It should also be measured by the ability of entrepreneurs to improve their business practices, strengthen their financial management, reach customers, sustain their livelihoods, and make informed decisions about the future of their enterprises.

SIKLAB recognizes that not every business will succeed and that no program can guarantee the survival of every enterprise. However, access to timely guidance and practical support can help entrepreneurs identify challenges earlier, consider alternatives, and determine the most appropriate path forward.

For a viable but struggling business, this could mean an opportunity to recover. For an aspiring entrepreneur, it could mean starting with a clearer understanding of the market. For a livelihood beneficiary, it could mean building a more reliable source of income for the family.

Ultimately, supporting small businesses is also about supporting people. Stronger enterprises can contribute to employment, household income, community development, and a more resilient local economy.

Igniting the Comeback

The challenges facing Filipino entrepreneurs require cooperation among educational institutions, industry, government, and community organizations. While no single initiative can resolve every business problem, practical support can help entrepreneurs develop the capabilities and confidence to navigate uncertainty.

Through SIKLAB, the DLSU-D CBAA Allied Business Department and LEDC seek to contribute to that effort by helping aspiring entrepreneurs develop viable ideas, existing businesses improve their operations, and struggling enterprises explore opportunities to adapt and recover.

When business gets tough, entrepreneurs should have somewhere to turn for guidance, support, and a chance to begin again.

SIKLAB stands for that possibility: the spark that can help transform ideas into opportunities, challenges into new directions, and livelihood activities into more sustainable enterprises.

Don't give up. Adapt. Innovate. SIKLAB!
