Dr. Allan Bernardo

Allan B.I. Bernardo is Distinguished University Professor and University Fellow at DLSU, where he was previously Dean of the College of Education and Vice President for Academics and Research. He currently serves in the Executive Committee of the International Union of Psychological Science, where he is Chair of the Standing Committee on Publications. 

His active research program relates to four themes related to SDGs 3, 4, and 10: (a) polyculturalism and intergroup relations in intercultural contexts, (b) hope and psychological well-being, (c) socioeconomic and other social inequalities, and (d) sociocultural aspects of learning and achievement. 

Since he completed his PhD from Yale University in 1992, he has published over 300 journal articles, books chapters, and monographs from his research. For the past six years, he was consistently included among the top 2% of scientists in the world in terms of scientific impact based on a study done in Stanford University and Elsevier. 

He is also proud to have mentored around 70 master’s students, doctoral students ,and postdoctoral researchers in psychology, education, and applied linguistics, and he has another dozen current graduate mentees in psychology. His mentees are mostly Filipino academics, but also include scholars from Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Macau SAR, and the US. 

He was Chief Editor of two SSCI- and SCOPUS-listed journals: Asian Journal of Social Psychology (2018-2020) and DLSU’s The Asia-Pacific Education Researcher (2001-2012), both Q1 journals. He is the only Filipino scientist to have served in editorial leadership positions in two Q1 journals.

He previously served as President of the Asian Association of Social Psychology, President of the ASEAN Regional Union of Psychological Societies, Chairperson of the Philippine Social Science Council, and President of the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP).

He has also served the Philippine Lasallian community in many different capacities. He served in the first National Mission Council of De La Salle Philippines (2006 to 2012). He served as member of the Board of Trustees of De La Salle-Santiago Zobel School (2003-2008), Jaime Hilario Integrated School, Bagac (2009-2012), La Salle Green Hills (2009-2012), De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (2009-2012, 2024-present) and De La Salle Lipa (2023-present). He currently Chair the Implementation Team on Ensuring Excellence, DLSP’s Project Miles.

He has received international recognition: International Prize for Literacy Research (UNESCO Institute for Education), Spencer Fellowship in Education Research (National Academy of Education), and Fulbright Advanced Research Fellowship. In the Philippines, he was awarded the NRCP’s Achievement Award, the PAP’s Outstanding Psychologist Award, the PRC’s Outstanding Professional Psychologist, among others. He was elected Academician of the NAST in 2007, and Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries in 2023, becoming the first Filipino social scientist elected to the merit-based science academy.
