Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, commissioner of the National Historical Commission (NHA) and Assistant Vice Chief Administrative Officer for Research of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) recently discussed the significance of this year’s independence day in relation to our country’s history.
In an interview with CNN Philippines’ Rico Hizon, Dr. Calairo likened the war that our frontliners are waging against COVID-19 to the battle of our national heroes to achieve independence for the country.
He said that like our nation’s heroes, today’s frontliners are laying their lives on the line for the sake of their fellow man. He added that it was a fitting tribute to dedicate this year’s celebration to their valiant efforts.
Dr. Calairo said that while this year’s independence day celebration is different from previous years because of the new normal of social distancing, the spirit of unity and patriotism is very much alive as Filipinos individually commemorate this significant chapter in the nation’s history.
