De La Salle University-Dasmariñas' Communication and Journalism Department (CJD) will host COMPACT (Communication Impact) from November 20 to 22, 2023. This year's theme is 'RESILIENCE: The Role of Communication in Disaster, Risk, and Humanitarian Communication,' emphasizing the vital role of media in crises.
According to COMPACT 2023 Chair, Associate Professor Marco Polo, the theme reflects the Philippines' vulnerability to disasters and the importance of Disaster, Risk, and Humanitarian Communication in communication curricula nationwide.
“First, because the Philippines is a risk and disaster-prone country, with many natural and man-made hazards. Filipinos have experienced various calamities and catastrophes throughout its recorded history but it has managed to survive and thrive. Second is that Disaster, Risk and Humanitarian Communication is now a core subject in the AB Communication curriculum in all communication schools in the country and the activity puts a spotlight on the various aspects of this subject.”
CJD aims not only to educate but also to take action in making DLSU-D a resilient institution. COMPACT 2023 focuses on preparing students for effective communication during crises, addressing challenges, and promoting empathy.
The activities include a parade, seminars, disaster response quizzes, a forum on humanitarian reporting, a fashion expo, and workshops on emergency preparedness. The event concludes with a tribute to the Maguindanao Massacre, emphasizing the commitment to ending impunity and ensuring media worker safety.
As CJD leads DLSU-D in becoming disaster-proof and risk-ready, it reflects a commitment to creating a safe and resilient campus environment, integrating strategies for disaster risk reduction, effective communication, and coordinated response mechanisms.
