The Azotea, with its arched stone support, is the traditional place for washing and drying clothes, as well as drying rice grains or coffee beans. It is a hanging garden and a recreation area where residents could enjoy tea in the afternoons, or simply relax and catch the breeze. Also situated at the azotea is an aljibe or cistern which is used to catch and filter water falling from the roof of the house during rainy days. On top of the aljibe is a pineapple motif to symbolize the owner's hospitality, friendship, and elite social standing.
