As the World Health Organization (WHO) declares June 24- July 24 as Self Care Month, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas continues to champion self-care as a means to achieve total wellness.
According to the WHO, the date was chosen to signify seven days in a week and 24 hours in a day, because self-care can be practiced at any time. This is why the last day of Self Care Month is on the 24th day of the seventh month of the year.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the administration of DLSU-D sought a means to support the members of the Lasallian community who were experiencing extraordinary mental health challenges brought on by the uncertainty of the situation.
The Office of the Provost (PROVOST) spearheaded the formation of a Self-Care Committee that came up with the guidelines for the DLSU-D’s self-care initiatives. This included the declaration of Self-Care Week per semester to provide a much-deserved break to students, faculty and staff from the demands of online learning.
A Self-Care Hub was also created to serve as a year-long resource to access self-care information and opportunities for members of the community.
Dr. Marzo Saez, Vice Chief Administrative Officer for Academics and Research , who strongly advocates for Self-Care, said that the WHO’s declaration for a Self-Care Month is an important reminder for every individual to care for themselves as they care for others.
“I think self-awareness is key towards self-care. Regardless of the time spent, if you don't spend it getting to know yourself better, then self-care will not successfully take place,” he said.
Emer Rasing, RCG, who represents the Student Wellness Center in the Self Care Committee, said: “In times of uncertainties, self-care is very important to combat or prevent the mental health problems experienced by our students. It is important to protect one’s own well-being, wellness, and happiness during great stress, anxiety and depression. Through our mental health activities and services aimed at enhancing wellness, we are committed to provide and create avenues to reach out and empower students.”
