5 Ways to Stay Out of Debt (and the Squid Game)

There are plenty of mental health issues that adults have to deal with and the prolonged effects of the pandemic has not been very helpful.

In response to the growing needs of the Lasallian community, the Student Wellness Center (SWC) conducted a survey to help address the needs of students and employees who are learning and working from home.

Among the top issues that students have admitted to suffer from is overthinking. Overthinking is defined as the act of “thinking too much about something and to put too much time into thinking about or analyzing something in a way that is more harmful than helpful.”

Overthinking is energy-draining. Some studies have shown that it raises one’s stress levels, diminishes creativity, muddles judgment and decision making.

There are several ways for adults to deal with the issue of overthinking.

  Practice mindfulness.

Take time to pause and breathe. Being mindful is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you are doing so that you won’t be and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around you.

  Take time to reflect.

Set aside time to reflect. Reflection helps you positively question what you do and why you do it. It also helps you discover if there is a better, more effective way to do it.

Focus on what you can control.

Take a minute to examine the things you have control over. Ask yourself, “What can I control?” and stop beating yourself over the things that you can do nothing about.

  Stop being a perfectionist.

Studies have also shown that perfectionists have higher level of stress, burnout and anxiety. Remember that no one is perfect and a flawless performance is never a prerequisite for success.
