Marching to Your Own Drum

Many people may say you’re different. Some might think, “You can’t do this,” or “You can’t make that.” These words can lower your self-esteem, making you doubt yourself to the point where you feel you can’t complete any tasks at all. You might also hear phrases like, “Ang galing niya mag-drawing,” “Ang galing niya mag-painting,” or “Ang creative niya, ‘no?” Some people accept the idea that they’re not creative enough to draw, be an artist, perform in theater, or do anything that involves creativity. But little do they know—you have your own talent, your own creativity. You just don’t realize it until you begin to appreciate your own design, your own style, and your own efforts.

There are small things that can help you realize that you are more creative than you think:

  1. 1. You enjoy seeing beautiful views and capturing small moments. Watching and appreciating little things can spark creativity. When you want to capture moments that reflect a happy, meaningful life, it shows you have an eye for aesthetics. How to enhance it: Take candid shots of small moments, edit them to highlight their beauty, and use photography as a way to sharpen your creative skills.

  2. 2. You are always curious. Creativity doesn’t always mean producing a masterpiece or winning awards. Sometimes, it begins with curiosity asking questions and experimenting. For example, mixing flavors like adding menudo soup to guisadong pancit, dipping hotdogs in gravy, or blending sodas together. Trying new things is a form of creativity. How to enhance it: Keep asking questions. Don’t be shy about exploring ideas and stay curious about everything.

  3. 3. You love making plans. Organizing outings, scheduling, and creating plans for friends or teams is also a form of creativity. It engages your strategic and practical thinking. How to enhance it: Add surprises or unique twists to your plans. Experiment with event themes, decorations, or activities. Creativity often comes from combining ideas, exploring new perspectives, and making things more engaging.

  4. 4. You enjoy solving problems. Spotting gaps, creating solutions, and connecting pieces to overcome challenges exercises your creative thinking. How to enhance it: Play apps or games that require problem-solving, like puzzles. Engage in activities that challenge you to think differently and find solutions.

  5. 5. You daydream. Whether you’re riding a jeepney or sitting in class, your imagination flows. You might think you’re silly for imagining scenarios with your crush or dreaming up stories, but this is actually a sign of creativity. How to enhance it: Write down those scenarios in a notebook or notes app. Over time, they can grow into stories you never thought you could create.
