De La Salle University-Dasmariñas’ Communication and Journalism Department joins the world in observing the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI).
The Communication and Journalism department (CJD) of De La Salle University Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) is one with all the organizations and individuals in calling for all governments and the global community to fiercely protect all journalists. Let all those concerned be accountable for their actions. We must never let the truth die. We must never let freedom of expression be curtailed. Thus, CJD is doing all it can to educate our students, the journalists of tomorrow, about their rights, about journalism safety, about media law and ethics as well as other pertinent matters, so they would be equipped when they will be the ones to get deployed in the field in the future.” Artin Umali, chair of the CJD said in his statement.
This was not the first time that DLSU-D observed the meaningful occasion as it included the IDEI among the activities in its annual COMPACT event last year.
"It is our responsibility to ensure that crimes against journalists do not go unpunished. We must see to it that journalists can work in safe conditions which allow a free and pluralistic press to flourish," Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO stated.
Back in 2013, the United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution, set the official day for IDEI for November 2 to urge member nations to come up with concrete measures to end the culture of impunity that has been plaguing the world as more media practitioners fall prey to acts of crime and violence.
