Students taking up NSTP-CWTS completed the Basic First Aid, Basic First Aid, Basic Life Support, and Disaster Risk and Reduction Management training last December as part of their final term requirements for the subject.
The training is in line with the mandate of RA 10121 Section 14 or the IRR of RA 9163 requiring NSTP students to undergo training and seminar for Disaster Response and Safety Management for at least seven hours.
The NSTP-CWTS and the Lasallian Community Development Center (LCDC) facilitated the four-day training of over 1,800 students who were enrolled in NSTP-CWTS.
“This initiative served as our vigilant response for the call to continuously promote and enforce DRRM education in the university. This is also a proactive approach of demonstrating our commitment to train and empower college students in helping reduce risks and vulnerabilities and to ensure the safety of schools and universities in the event of disasters and emergencies,” said NSTP chair Jemily Puchero.
Meanwhile, students also shared some of their reflections after learning essential information that can save their lives in the face of an emergency.
“Understanding how to use fire extinguishers and how to respond was eye opening. Its more than a skill. It’s a mindset of preparedness and helping others stay safe, said one participant.
“People’s fear and anxiety about what might happen are significantly reduced when they have information and a clear plan about what to do in the case of an unexpected event,” another student said.
