Mechanical engineering students from De La Salle University-Dasmarinas designed and fabricated a multifunctional coffee bean processing machine for the benefit of the Barangay Tua Farmers Agriculture Cooperative.
The project, led by Isshi B. Buhay and Ronn Andrei A. Babanto, alongside 4th year students, Sahlina Marie R. Aldave, Roldan L. Bongcasan, and Glenth Allen D. Tausa, was part of an outreach initiative that was developed in collaboration with the Lasallian Community Development Center (LCDC), the DLSU-D Mechanical Engineering Program, and the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT). It also received support from the Junior Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - South Luzon Cluster and Junior Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - Cavite Chapter.
The machine makes work easier for the farmers as it automates pre-sorting, dehulling, post-sorting, and washing in the coffee processing process, reducing the time and effort needed to complete these main tasks.
Apart from their innovation benefitting Barangay Tua farmers, the project also received recognition as Best Thesis for the Mechanical Engineering Program. they are also set to present their machine at the 25th PSME Cavite General Membership Meeting and Technical Seminar later this year.
