De La Salle University–Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) recently hosted the 2nd Catholic Social Thought Forum as part of its Lasallian Mission Festival, providing a platform for reflection on the role of Catholicism in Philippine society and history.
The forum, held at the Br. Andrew Gonzalez Reception Hall, brought together students, faculty, and guests to explore how faith shapes Filipino identity and community life.
The event commenced with opening remarks from Br. Iñigo Riola, followed by a keynote lecture delivered by noted historian Dr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” Chua. Titled “DIYOS NA NAKIPAGKAPWA-TAO SA TAO: Ang Papel ng Katolisismo sa Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino,” Dr. Chua’s presentation highlighted the enduring influence of Catholic values on Filipino culture, identity, and social interactions.
An open forum allowed participants to engage directly with Dr. Chua, asking questions and sharing reflections on the intersection of faith and social development. The discussion was further enriched by Dr. Gil Ellema, who provided a reactor’s response, offering additional perspectives on how Catholic social thought continues to inform contemporary Filipino life.
The forum underscored DLSU-D’s commitment to nurturing faith-informed social consciousness, encouraging the university community to critically reflect on the ethical and societal implications of Catholic teachings in modern Philippine society.
