The De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) research team joined the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning National Council of the Philippines (ASAIHL NCP) conference, held under the theme “Sustainable Cities: The Role of Higher Education through 10 Years of SDGs.”
Representing the University Research Office, Director Dr. Jose Aims Rocina presented the study “Social Implications of Plastic Pollution Mitigation Initiatives near the Imus River: Basis for Policy Framework.”
The research was funded by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) through the ASEANO Project—Norway’s flagship initiative in water and environmental sustainability. The study explored the socioeconomic dimensions of plastic pollution, highlighting how waste affects the livelihoods of waste pickers and recyclers, and examining the influence of tingi culture (sachet-based purchasing) on plastic consumption.
Dr. Rocina emphasized that effective plastic waste management must be holistic, inclusive, and culturally grounded. He stressed that integrating social and economic realities is essential to advancing environmental sustainability. This research was made possible through a collaborative effort between DLSU-D and the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), reinforcing the university’s commitment to community-centered, policy-relevant environmental action.
