Students from the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Bachelor of Special Needs Education programs staged “In Their World: The Spectrum Experience – Voices, Perspectives, and Simulations for Awareness and Inclusion in Autism Spectrum Disorder” to promote deeper understanding and inclusion of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The event featured Juan Alfonzo “Japonz” Pulhin Dacumos as resource speaker. A summa cum laude Psychology graduate from De La Salle University-Manila, Dacumos also served as Commissioner for Disability Inclusion under the University Student Government during his undergrad years.
Diagnosed with autism at 18, Dacumos shared his journey of overcoming challenges in social interaction and sensory sensitivity. He emphasized how these experiences became sources of self-awareness and advocacy.
“There is a world ready to accept and include neurodiverse people like me,” he said.
The seminar offered informative discussions and simulations that highlighted the social and communication experiences of people on the spectrum. Through personal stories and real-life perspectives, participants gained meaningful insights into the diverse realities of neurodiverse individuals and the importance of empathy and inclusion.
