The COIL or Collaborative Online International Learning is a teaching and learning methodology that allows universities to bring internationalization to their classrooms by connecting students and faculty to engage and collaborate in a multicultural, global, and online environment.
COIL Support System
- Teaching-Learning Content and Administrative Support
- COIL teachers should be supported by their departments in planning and implementing COIL content and pedagogy though consultation, discussion, and sharing of resource materials. The department chair should make this support system happen.
- They may be assisted by their departments in coordinating with offices like OUR, Dean’s Office, or CILP when necessary.
- Adjustments in teaching schedules should be facilitated when necessary.
- COIL teachers may consult the COIL community (faculty members who have done COIL) anytime. The Linkages and Scholarship Office may facilitate this consultation.
- Technical Assistance
- While the online platform to be used is something that should be agreed upon by the COIL teachers and their partners, they may ask the help of CILP in the areas of LMS, online engagement, and online media among others.
- The COIL teacher may be given a space on campus (e.g., discussion room at the library) if needed and if the time of the online engagement falls within office hours.
- The COIL community may be consulted when necessary.
- Coaching and Mentoring
- Departments/colleges/faculty members who may need COIL coaching and mentoring should coordinate with the Linkages and Scholarship Office for capacity building concerns.
- The Linkages and Scholarship Office will convene a regular discussion with COIL teachers via the MS Teams COIL community to provide a venue for sharing and possible problem-solving.
- Evaluation
- A post-mortem will be held by the Linkages and Scholarship Office to determine lessons learned, challenges encountered, and strategies to overcome challenges. These should then be contained in a report to be sent to the PROVOST and all the departments. Data should inform the next cycle of COIL training and implementation.
- Support for the COIL Teacher’s Department
- As a support for the department that is supporting a COIL teacher, that department receives a subsidy of 200 USD of honorarium per international speaker who may be invited as a resource person for major subjects and capacity-building activities.
