National Conference on Values and Religious Education

The Religious Education Department will hold the 4th National Conference on Values and Religious Education via Zoom, Listening to the Beats: Fostering Religious and Values Education for Transformative and Sustainable Education on June 15, 2024.

Religious and values education plays an important role in shaping individuals' worldviews, attitudes, and behaviors. In a society characterized by cultural diversity and interconnectedness, the need for inclusive and sustainable perspectives is more vital than ever. Additionally, the imperative for social transformation towards a just and equitable society necessitates the active engagement of religious and values education.

SUB-THEMES: Inclusion, Sustainability, and Social Transformation

Inspired by the Holy Father's call to "listen to the beats of the signs of the times," NCVRE 2024 focuses on three interwoven sub-themes:

  • Inclusion emphasizes the recognition, acceptance, and celebration of diversity. The contemporary educational landscape demands a shift towards inclusive pedagogies and perspectives that respect and honor differences. The conference will provide educators with insights into how religious and values education can foster inclusivity and communion, and promote dialogue among various faith traditions and worldviews.
  • Sustainability addresses the urgent global need to preserve our planet and its resources. Religious and values education can play a significant role in cultivating ecological consciousness and responsibility. The conference will engage with how educators can integrate environmental ethics and sustainable practices, specifically inspired by Laudato Si, into their teachings, encouraging individuals to become stewards of God’s creation.
  • Social transformation summarizes the idea of creating a just and equitable society through collective efforts. Religious and values education can inspire individuals to challenge systemic injustices and work toward positive change. The conference will provide a venue to explore ways to empower educators to instill a sense of social responsibility, advocate for marginalized communities, and promote ethical leadership.

Objectives

  1. Provide educators with a comprehensive understanding of the latest trends, research, and developments in the field of religious and values education, with a specific focus on inclusion, sustainability, and social transformation.
  2. Inspire educators to adapt their pedagogical approaches to foster inclusive, sustainable, and socially transformative learning experiences, emphasizing practical strategies for integrating these themes into curricula and classroom activities.
  3. Encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, allowing educators from various religious backgrounds, academic disciplines, and levels of education to share their insights, challenges, and success stories.
  4. Provide a platform for educators to establish connections, collaborate on research and projects, and collectively address the challenges and opportunities in religious and values education.
